BPO agents aren’t going anywhere. They’re just getting an upgrade.

You’ve heard the doom loop by now:

AI arrives. Jobs disappear. Call centers become chatbots talking to chatbots.

But here’s what’s actually happening inside the world of Business Process Outsourcing.

Yes, AI is automating the boring stuff. Password resets. Ticket routing. Basic “where’s my order” queries.

But smart BPOs aren’t firing their agents. They’re sending them back to school.

Think about it like this:

For years, agents spent 80% of their day on repetitive tasks—and maybe 20% on real problem-solving. That’s backwards.

Now? AI handles the repeatable and easy tasks. And agents are learning a whole new set of skills:

  • How to guide an AI bot through a tricky customer issue
  • How to spot when an AI  bot is about to get it wrong
  • How to handle the messy, emotional, human moments that no algorithm can touch

Some companies are even renaming their training departments. “Upskilling academies.” “AI readiness programs.” It’s not fluffy HR talk—it’s survival.

And here’s the surprising part: It turns out agents actually like it. There is less burnout and more interesting work. Needless to say, these more skilled agents can earn higher pay.

One BPO leader told me recently, “We used to lose people after 6 months. Now they’re asking to stay.”

Here’s what else is quietly happening: investors are paying a premium for these enlightened BPOs. A shop with an upskilled, AI-augmented workforce looks a lot more attractive to buyers than one bleeding low-value seats — and multiple expansion follows.

There is no doubt that AI will change BPO. No question about that -it’s already happening.  But the winners won’t be the ones with the cheapest seats. They’ll be the ones who bet on their people.

So here’s my question: Is your BPO partner quietly cutting headcount — or are they investing in upskilling?

Would love to hear what you’re seeing out there.
