From Practice Owner to Business Manager: Growing Your Business Value
Are you running a practice, or managing a business? For many financial planners, the first 15 years are spent loving the advice but struggling with the operations. Mark Leuen experienced this firsthand before discovering the “secret sauce” to business valuation: The Business System.

Here are the five pillars to maximize your enterprise value and become “sale-ready” at any moment.1. Build a Business SystemA business system is the foundation of consistency. Think of McDonald’s or Toyota—they rely on “boring consistency” to deliver the same quality every time.

  • The Goal: Create a system where the business can operate independently of the owner [47:35].
  • The Result: High consistency leads to client trust (turning them into advocates) and significantly higher multiples during a sale [01:05:34].
2. The Power of the Annual Information Memorandum (IM)Most owners only create an IM when they are ready to sell. Leuen suggests producing one every October [12:42].
  • Why it works: It forces you to look at your metrics (FUM, retention, ratios) annually.
  • The Transformative Effect: When you know a decision will affect your next IM, you make better, data-driven choices [15:23]. It ensures you are “sale-ready” even if you have no plans to sell for 10 years [58:32].
3. Manage Your Data (Clean & Complete)“Dirty data in, dirty data out.” High-value businesses have a strict data protocol [53:09].Assign a “data champion” to ensure every entry in your CRM is consistent.
  • Clean data allows for accurate trend analysis and gives buyers confidence during due diligence [52:16].
4. Build a Library of Procedures and ChecklistsEven NASA uses checklists [55:10]. Having a “leatherbound procedures manual” supports your share price during negotiations.
  • Efficiency: Use templates for meeting file notes and annual reviews.
  • Outsourcing: Once you have clear procedures, you can successfully outsource administrative tasks (like annual review documents) without sacrificing quality [35:04].
5. Rank Your Clients for ProfitabilityDon’t be afraid to let go of B and C-grade clients. Leuen famously dropped his client count by 69% but only lost 11% of his revenue [24:09].
  • Capacity: Removing low-profit clients opens space for “A-grade” clients who value your service.
  • Tools: Use an Ideal Client Calculator to set minimum requirements for new prospects [57:33].

The Bottom LineWhen opportunity knocks, will you be ready? Mark Leuen sold his business within five months of a chance meeting because he already had his 2019 IM ready to email [43:06]. By transitioning from a practitioner to a business manager, you don’t just increase your profit—you build a legacy that is transferable and highly coveted.
